Major Projects: Love Field Moving Sidewalk Proposal

The project: A 1/4 mile art installation to run alongside a 1/4 mile moving sidewalk in the parking garage of Love Field Airport in Dallas.

Our proposal: My art. Anne Militello's fabulous lighting design. And an original musical score by composer James Neel. It woulda been fabulous—a colorful and relaxing environment of multi sensory art to still and transition the traveler from Dallas to the clouds and back again. But we didn't get the job. That's show biz.

Congratulations to Susan Magilow and Philip Lamb, who DID.

Dallas

The traveler either departing Dallas or arriving here glides past the Dallas skyline, with easily recognizable silhouettes of prominent downtown buildings as part of the art. The lighting is set between layers in the construction, as well as shimmering from above and at the foot of the art. The valuted ceiling under which the traveler moves is an intense blue. Speakers are out of sight and above the construction, filtering in James Neel's original score for the Dallas panel.

Pegasus

The flying horse, the moon at night, or a rainbow in daylight all suggest what the traveler might see when first taking to the air in Dallas. The red flying horse is Pegasus, and in Dallas is known as the symbol of Mobil Oil. At some point along the way, Pegasus became emblematic of Dallas, and has been adopted as an icon of the city. The vaulted ceiling in this section is kelly green, the James Neel score transitions to a new composition, and Anne Militello's lighting enhances everything.

Texas

The vaulted ceiling in this section is red, and here too an original James Neel's score would waft in through hidden speakers.

Wings

The traveler is in the fold of the huge wings as they have now transitioned into flight. The vaulted ceiling here is orange, and again, the environment would include another original James Neel's score, invisibly drifting downward from hidden speakers.

Clouds

The traveler is now face to face with the other world of the clouds and the stars. This vaulted ceiling is a rich turquoise blue, and the musical score is again by James Neel's.

Welcome

Title: Welcome
Scale model for finished construction that would have been approx. 50 ft. x 12 ft.

This construction was to inhabit the space that is between the parking lot area and the hallway into the airport. Welcome is depicted in six languages, and serves to greet both the arriving and departing passenger.
